Freight Express: About us

Freight Express were established in 1979 in central Edinburgh, and we have progressively grown and moved, and are now based in a 40,000 sq. ft. warehouse on the outskirts of Penicuik.

As a Scottish based company we can provide an equally good service to Scotland and the North, which is an area many others tend to avoid.

Since Freight Express began we have been involved in the transport of furniture – our very first customer was one of Edinburgh’s finest antique shops. In the early days it was mainly antiques and work for British Olivetti, moving word processors and computers. In those days it took two strong men and a tail lift to move a word processor – now it would tuck under your arm.

In the early 1980’s we were subcontracted to do deliveries on behalf of Angus Wolfe Murray, an owner driver who went between Edinburgh and London in his truck, moving furniture and fine art, for the aristocracy and the rich and famous. After a couple of years of working together, Angus decided to retire from this side of his business and concentrate solely on Art. Freight Express took over this business and our weekly trips to London began.

Some years later, after working with the National Trust and Historic Scotland (countless trips to palaces and castles), Freight Express were the only business invited to move the entire contents of two floors of Holyrood Palace to allow the EEC summit to take place.

Over the years the gradual decrease in antiques led us towards new furniture. We knew we had the skill and understanding, and as time has progressed we have become established and recognised for our abilities in this area. Our customer list reads like a who’s who of top furniture and upholstery manufacturers, and extends to cover other items of a similarly vulnerable nature. We deliver kitchens, marble and granite, glass chandeliers and refrigeration equipment in addition to virtually every known type of furniture.

At Freight Express we have always prided ourselves on our ability to take the skills of the furniture remover and those of a nationwide distribution operation and successfully combine the two. We fully understand the value placed on the safe and careful handling of both the goods and their final recipient, and to this end only employ staff who are trained and experienced furniture removers, committed to providing a quality service.

Unlike many of the UK’s shipping companies, who subcontract most of their customers’ deliveries to the cheapest option, Freight Express run a fleet of vehicles with full time staff and can thus ensure that our high standards of service can be maintained throughout.
